5 Disadvantages of Installing Your Own Security System
Are you thinking of installing your own security system? You might want to think again. Most business owners don’t need to be told the corporate world can be a risky place, but they may not realize just how dangerous it can be for their businesses.
According to a survey by PwC, 46% of companies reported experiencing fraud, corruption, and economic crime in 2022. And it doesn’t end there. Surprisingly, 75% of employees have stolen at least once from their employer. That’s a pretty staggering number! Considering these numbers, a security system isn’t just about protecting your information — it’s about protecting your livelihood.
Installing your own security system is an excellent way to do that. But before you start, make sure you’re aware of the cons of DIY as compared to professionally installed security systems. Here are some reasons why installing a DIY system may not be right for you.
1. Add-Ins Can Be Costly
If you’re considering DIY installation of your own security system, you might want to consider the cost of adding additional pieces.
While you can find a DIY kit with most of what you need, some specific add-ins will be harder to find. For example, if you want to add an outdoor camera or motion sensor, these are not always included in the basic package. And this is where the cost of DIY installation can add up quickly.
So while these extras are great additions, they can be costly in the long run if you’re not careful about how much you purchase at once. For instance, if one camera costs $100 and you want two cameras total, then that’s $200 right off the bat — and that’s just for two cameras! Add another $50 for monitoring services, and now we’re talking about $250 before even starting the construction and installation processes.
2. You Take Full Responsibility
When you install your own security system, you take full responsibility for its upkeep and maintenance. You must be aware of new threats and vulnerabilities as they arise and be prepared to handle them.
In addition, many other responsibilities come with installing a DIY system. For example:
- If anything goes wrong with it (or even if you suspect something’s not working), you’ll have to deal with the consequences yourself.
- You will be responsible for installing the system correctly so that it works properly when needed.
- You will also be responsible for any repairs or replacements that are necessary over time.
If you want to keep your business safe and secure, consider hiring an expert instead. You’ll get peace of mind knowing that there’s someone on call 24/7 who knows exactly what they’re doing.
3. No Backup Option
DIY systems don’t have any backup options. If something goes wrong with your system, you’re stuck without any way to get the help you need. If a hacker is able to gain access to your system, for instance, they could wreak havoc on your company’s data or even steal money from your bank accounts.
Did you know that 34% of burglaries each year affect small businesses?
If you’re worried about protecting your business and people’s data, it might be worth investing in a professionally installed system. If you hire a pro, you’ll have someone on call that can come over and fix any problems that arise.
Moreover, if you want to upgrade or change your system in the future, a pro will know exactly what needs to be done and how much it will cost ahead of time. You won’t have to worry about making costly mistakes or being surprised with unexpected bills later down the line.
4. Limited Security Features
Installing your own security system can be a great way to save money and have more control over your business’s security measures.
However, one of the biggest disadvantages is that DIY systems have no additional security features. DIY systems typically only have standard features, such as motion sensors and cameras. But these are just the basics — they won’t help you get the most out of your security system or protect your business from theft or lawsuits.
For example, DIY systems don’t come with a fail-safe option, which means if something goes wrong there’s no way to contact someone for help without tipping off the intruder.
5. Equipment Quality Concerns
Another major concern is equipment quality. There are tons of sensors available for all kinds of purposes, and some are more reliable than others.
If you’re going to spend money on a system, wouldn’t you want it to work properly? A professionally installed system will have high-quality equipment that’s guaranteed to work well together — and if anything goes wrong with any piece of equipment, the rest of your system will still work properly (so long as it’s not damaged).
This can sometimes be difficult or impossible with a DIY system because every part is separate — if one sensor goes out, your whole system could go down. That’s also where customer service comes in. Who do you call if something goes wrong with your DIY security system? The company who sold it to you? Your neighbor who installed it? Or a local repairman?
The answer isn’t always clear when dealing with a DIY installation; however, if there’s ever an issue with a professionally installed system, you know exactly who to call.
